On Tuesday 3 October at 7pm, we are hosting a tour of Sid Motion’s exhibition of new work by Damien Meade; followed by a viewing of Alvaro Barrington ‘Grandma’s Land’ at Sadie Coles HQ.

Since 2007 Meade has been making paintings of things he has made in clay. This exhibition continues that mode of enquiry, but yet it marks a shift in his work – a recalibration of scale, surface, and subject, and a break with the portrait genre and the formless clay abstractions for which he has become known.

Grandma’s Land is a major new body of work in which Alvaro Barrington returns to his early experience of life growing up in the Caribbean. He will take over the entirety of the Kingly Street space in Soho, creating a total environment described by the artist as a ‘universe’.

In 1983, the photographer Baldwin Lee left his home in Knoxville, Tennessee, and set off on a road trip through the American South. He did not know what his subject would be, but during the trip, he found himself drawn to photographing Black Americans at home, at work and at play, in the street and amid nature. The images by Lee, a first generation Chinese American, showing an intimate portrayal of daily life in the American South, are now considered among the most remarkable in the last half century.

Conceived to recreate an imaginary collector’s home, this is a new refreshing take on an art fair. Bravo @nazyvassegh 👏
